Understanding Node ID’s

Node ID refers to a unique identifier assigned to each participant’s node within the network. This identifier is a cryptographic hash of the node’s public key and serves as an address for routing payments.

When you set up your Lightning node, it generates a public-private key pair. The public key is used to create your node ID, ensuring that it’s unique and verifiable on the network. This ID plays a critical role in the routing process. When someone initiates a payment, the Lightning Network uses node IDs to determine the optimal path for the payment to travel through various connected nodes until it reaches its destination.

In essence, the node ID acts as a digital fingerprint for your Lightning node, facilitating efficient payment routing without revealing your actual identity. It’s similar to a GPS coordinate for your node in the Lightning Network’s virtual landscape, enabling seamless and secure payments between participants.
